My white friends sure have liked the funny & gentle posts I’ve sprinkled into my feed. Here’s my challenge to YOU.
It’s okay if you don’t have words to respond to the other tough posts, but make sure that you’re willing to feel uncomfortable with the tough stuff. Don’t let yourself say, “I just can’t keep looking at the terrible images & words,” and then scroll past or look the other way.
One element of white privilege is that we are afforded a VERY comfortable existence in comparison to those of our black neighbors.
One of the reasons the peaceful protests of the past haven’t broken through to us is that we don’t allow anyone to make us feel uncomfortable.
One of the biggest obstacles between us and change is OUR habit of living in denial.
My friends, it’s appropriate for us to sit in the discomfort of these conversations & exclamations because it’s how we better understand the perspective of their reality. Being willing to listen to voices that disrupt our denial is a necessary step towards change. If you don’t believe that you are in a position to change racism & it’s impact on our society, then your first step may need to be to feel the pain a little for yourself.
Don’t be a wimp. Watch this shit. Look at it. Read it. This is real. Looking the other way is not the answer.
